A slow tire leak may not leave you with a completely flat tire. You may notice one tire looks lower, the pressure warning returns after several days, or the vehicle handles differently. Before adding air, plugging the tire, or installing the spare, locate the leak and determine whether the damage is safe to address temporarily.
Start With a Simple Leak-Finding Routine
- Park on a level surface, switch off the vehicle, and let the tires cool.
- Compare all four tires for an obvious difference in pressure or appearance.
- Inflate the suspect tire using the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure.

What Can Cause a Slow Loss of Air?

Use Soapy Water to Narrow the Search

A leak usually creates bubbles that grow or reform after being wiped away. If the area is wet but no bubbles appear, dry it and repeat the test. Some slow punctures require patience, so recheck the tread after the tire has been inflated.
Compare the Temporary Repair Options

No temporary method works for every slow leak. Your choices generally include adding air and monitoring, installing the spare, using emergency sealant, or plugging an appropriate tread puncture.
Adding air and monitoring may be reasonable when the pressure loss is minimal and you are close to a place where the tire can be inspected. This is not a repair. It only allows a short, controlled trip while you continue watching the pressure and handling.
A spare tire is the safer emergency choice when the leak is rapid or the damaged tire is unsafe to drive on. Follow the vehicle’s instructions for the spare, including any speed or distance restrictions, and confirm it is properly secured before leaving.
Emergency tire sealant may provide a quick, temporary response when the product instructions match the tire and situation. It is not suitable for every puncture, tire, wheel, or vehicle and may complicate later inspection. Treat it as an emergency measure, not a permanent solution.
A tire plug is intended for certain punctures in the tread’s repairable area. It is not a universal solution for sidewall damage, bead leaks, large openings, or a tire driven while seriously underinflated. Follow the specific repair kit’s instructions and arrange a proper inspection afterward.
The best choice depends on the damage’s location and size, how quickly the tire loses air, and how far you need to travel. If any of those factors are uncertain, use the spare or seek professional assistance.
Decide Whether a Plug Is Appropriate
Consider a plug only after confirming that the leak is a suitable tread puncture. The area should be free of obvious sidewall or wheel damage, and the tire should not show signs of having been driven while badly underinflated. Read the instructions for the specific kit rather than assuming all plugs are installed identically.
A practical plug sequence
Keep the puncturing object in place until you have the tools and are ready to prepare the puncture. Remove it, clean and prepare the channel as directed, insert the repair material to the instructed depth, and trim or finish it according to the kit directions. Inflate the tire and repeat the soapy-water test.
If bubbles continue, the material does not seat correctly, or the puncture is larger or more complicated than expected, stop relying on the plug. Use the spare or arrange professional service. Even a repair that appears to hold should be checked again before a longer trip and monitored afterward.
Slow-Leak Troubleshooting Checklist

Myth: A Tire That Holds Air Is Fixed
A tire that accepts air and looks full is not necessarily repaired. Pressure only shows that the tire is inflated at that moment; it does not confirm that the leak has stopped, the casing is undamaged, or the tire is safe for normal driving.
The same applies to a successful-looking plug. Stopped bubbling suggests the temporary repair may be holding, but the repair could still be unsuitable because of its location or hidden damage.
Inflate the tire only enough to make the next safe decision, not to postpone inspection indefinitely. After a temporary repair, recheck the pressure and leak area, limit driving, and have the tire assessed as soon as practical. Do not: drive on a visibly damaged sidewall, remove a puncturing object long before you are ready to repair it, test a questionable tire at high speed, or treat repeated air loss as normal maintenance.
Do not judge a tire only by its appearance. It can look reasonably inflated while still losing air, and a short drive can worsen existing damage. Inspect first, make the smallest temporary move necessary, and replace the temporary solution with proper tire service.
Why the Leak Keeps Returning—and What to Do
If the tire loses air again after inflation, the original leak may have been missed, the temporary repair may not have sealed, or air may be escaping from another point such as the valve or bead. Repeatedly adding air creates a cycle while the underlying problem remains unresolved.
Temperature changes can also affect pressure readings, so compare readings under similar conditions when possible. Restart the inspection at the valve, bead, and tread, then escalate if the location or condition is uncertain.
Use the spare or roadside assistance if the tire will not hold air, shows structural damage, or requires travel beyond the limits of a temporary measure. Once the vehicle is safely stationary, arrange a proper inspection instead of making inflation part of your routine.
A slow leak is manageable only when its source and the tire’s condition are understood. Inflate it safely, confirm the source with soapy water, and choose the spare or a temporary tread repair only when the damage clearly fits that option.
